low fat meal recipes

This is the first of many low fat recipes i will be putting up on here
the first one is Pan-Seared Beef with Ginger, Pineapple, & chilli

This Meal will serve 4
Ingredients:
4 lean beef stakes(such as rump, sirloin, or fillet) 3and a half ounces each
2 tbsp ginger wine
1-inch piece fresh ginger root finely chopped
1 garlic clove
1 tsp ground chilli
1 tsp vegetable oil
salt and pepper
red chili strips to garnish

To Serve:
freshly cooked noodle
2 scallions, shredded

Relish
8 ounces fresh pineapple 
1 small red bell pepper 
1 red chili
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 piece preserved ginger in syrup, drained and chopped

Cooking Instructions:

1 trim any excess fat from the beef. Using a meat mallet or covered rolling pin, pound the steaks until 1/2 inch thick season on both sides and place in shallow dish

2 mix the ginger wine, ginger root, garlic, and chili powder and pour over the meat. cover and chill for 30 minutes.

3 meanwhile, make the relish. peel and finely chop the pineapple and place it in a bowl. halve, seed, and finely chop the bell pepper and chili. stir into the pineapple, together with the soy sauce and preserved ginger. cover and chill until required

4 brush a ridged skillet with the oil and heat until very hot. drain the beef and add to the pan, pressing down to seal. lower the heat and cook for 5 minutes. turn the steaks and cook for 5 minutes.

5 drain the steaks on paper towels and transfer to serving plates. garnish with chilli strips,and serve with noodles, scallions, and the relish.

When I first started to address my poor fitness level back in January this year, I bought a pedometer and am ashamed to say that the average number of steps I did each day was 1800! I had no idea that I was that inactive!

You’re right, walking with friends is good. Don’t know how it is for you guys, but we are having terrible ‘summer’ weather in the UK at the moment.

I am averaging 8-10 thousand steps a day right now… and boy, it’s a struggle! I found your tip about marching on the spot in front of the TV before sitting down, really hard. I was dead beat after about 5 minutes!

10 Day Countdown to Fitness: Day 9

When the next commercial break begins, stand up and do some squats.  Again, it doesn’t matter how many you can do; just do the best you can until your show resumes.

For the next commercial break, hit the floor and do crunches.  Do as many as you can during the commercial.  And again, it doesn’t matter how many you can do.  Do what you can, and be proud of the fact that you’re exercising!

Congratulations…you have just completed a full body work out.  Do this once a day, and you will quickly see and feel many changes in your body.

If you have kids, I’d suggest getting them involved in doing this with you.  It’s a great way to start building the exercise habit in them, and you will have fun as well.

Yet Another Reason to Reduce Sugar

Sugar has been the biggest culprit for my weight gain and mood shifts throughout the day. Once I cut sugar out (refined sugar that is) entirely from my diet, many positive things have happened to me. My cravings went down enormously. I no longer suffer the sugar crash that would hit me around 3 in the afternoon. I lost weight. Sugar packs so many calories and is buried in so many bad foods such as donuts, cookies, cakes, etc. Moreover, my mood swings from sugar have ceased.
It took about three days to abstain from sugar entirely, before it became a broken habit. I now get my source of sugar from fruit (cantaloupe, strawberries, apples, etc.) but do refrain from pineapple, honey dew, watermelon or have them on a very limited basis (once every three months) and I only consume them either after lunch or after dinner to assuage their impact on my glycemic index.
I did not know about AMD but I do know about diabetes and sugar is definitely to blame. Thanks for your note.

The essentials: 5. Do things ahead of time



What is the essential idea behind “Do thingsahead of time” in tea serving?  I havealmost the same understanding as common opinions.  Leeway of time will make a leeway on yourmind.  A relaxed mind allows you to treatyour guests with composure.  Eventually,it helps for serving good tea.
My interpretation of Rikyu’s “Do things aheadof time” is that
leeway on your mind is important.
As I was writing this entry, I remembered myown experience when I was a student.  Oneday, on my way home, I saw a familiar businessman parking his car on a streetone block away from my house.  I asked mymother what he was doing there.  She saidthat he was probably waiting to adjust the time for our appointment.  Before this incident, I thought that beingearly is always good but I realized afterwards that it may not be appreciatedat times.  The host may not be ready atthe time and you might make him/her rush. I was impressed with how professional the businessman was.  Not only because of the time consideration,but also because he waited at a place not visible from our house.   This behavior comes from the spirit ofthinking of others.    If youhave the chance to visit your friend in Japan, try to be just on time or slightlyearlier than the appointment.
This interpretation may vary in the futureas I experience and understand The Way of Tea more.

Flash-Only Websites and Insulting Your Customers: Shooting Yourself In The Foot



The screenshot above shows what a flash-only website looks like to a user who has flashblock installed. Does this look inviting? Professional? Do you think you're going to make a new customer or retain an old customer with this sort of greeting?

Why not flash?


A large number of people legitimately cannot install flash on their computers or browsers. Most users on mobile phones cannot use flash; Adobe discontinued flash for mobile devices some time ago. Some very old computers cannot handle flash, and some browsers, including text-based browsers, cannot handle it either. Flash can also provide problems for the blind and visually-impaired, who must often rely on text-based browsers. Yes, by relying on flash you are completely shutting out visually-impaired users.
Many users simply do not install flash player. Security concerns are a major reason. Security-sensitive workplaces can ban the use of flash for this reason. Annoyance and slow speed on older computers are another concern that leads people to not install flash.
Many users who have flash player installed use flashblock, because they find flash ads annoying. A certain portion of these users will choose not to load the flash elements of your website, instead just leaving your site in annoyance.
Search engine crawlers cannot navigate flash menus and flash websites. If your site is just one page with a giant flash program, you will only get one page indexed by search engine, and it will just index a blank page. Even if your website has normal URL's and some text content, if you rely on flash for navigation features, the search engines will not be able to navigate your website and will have a hard time determining its structure and returning your site in search results.
If your site is flash-only, you lose the benefit of people being able to include deep links to specific pages on your site, a benefit I describe in my post about the importance of having product pages for individual teas. This also causes you to lose potential traffic when people talk about your products on blogs or social networking sites.
Even people who have flash installed and not blocked may still find it annoying. Even before I installed flashblock, I disliked flash-only websites, and I had a very low tolerance level for them.


Think these are small amounts of users? The percentage of mobile users is on the increase; on my websites it tends to range in the 5-10% zone. I've seen estimates that roughly 25% of Firefox users use flashblock. My estimation is that if you have a flash-only website, you are shutting out a minimum of 15% of your users, and probably losing 25-50% of visitors between annoyance and inability to view your page.

In practice, however, when considering the loss of search engine navigability, since search contributes 50-80% of traffic to many websites, you can easily be losing 90% or more of your total traffic by having a flash-only website.

Why Does Glass Break Or Shatter When Pouring Boiling Water Into It? On Thermal Shock



Even the most heat-resistant glass, like this borosilicate glassware, is subject to shattering under thermal shock.

Why does some glass shatter when heated?

The phenomenon which causes glass to shatter when we pour boiling water into it is called thermal shock. Wikipedia has a very technical article on Thermal shock that is probably more than most of you would need to know about it.

Unfortunately, not all cups or vessels are suitable for handling hot liquids with ease. Typical glass, in general, is not able to handle such heat very well. The reason is that as the glass heats, its density changes; it expands. Pouring boiling water into a glass is highly likely to shatter it, because the hot water contacts part of the glass first, whereas other parts of the glass (such as the outside of the cup) remain cooler. The glass thus does not expand as a whole, but is pulled in different directions as part of it expands and part does not; this difference produces the shattering.

Glass is less likely to break or shatter if we warm it up gradually. Pouring boiling water into an ice-cold glass is much more likely to shatter it, as is putting a hot piece of glass into a cold bath of water.

This effect of thermal shock is strong enough that it even can cause special types of glass like Pyrex or borosilicate glass, used in a lot of commercial labware, to shatter. I remember this from a chemistry lab in high school: we produced a solid in a test tube and needed to extract it, and to do so easily, we heated the tube to a high temperature, and then put it in a bath of cold water. This procedure caused even the heat-resistant labware to shatter.

Preventing breaking:

We can prevent teaware, cups, and mugs from breaking by following two guidelines:


Avoid using generic glass for hot liquids; stick to ceramics or glass that we know to be heat-resistant.
Even when using ceramics or heat-resistant glass, avoid very large, sudden changes in temperature.
